Subtle Secrets

Go to the winter woods: listen there, look, watch, and “the dead months” will give you a subtler secret than any you have yet found in the forest."

- Fiona Macleod, Where the Forest Murmurs

A new set of prints will be coming to underabluesky soon.

Is it February yet?
I miss the sunshine.

Of Printed Matter

Do you love to read?

I do.

Word by word. Page by page. I love drifting off into somebody else's world. Tales of heartbreak or joy, courage or fear, past or future, I love them all.

One of my favourite books of all time (and I have many...too many to list) is Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance. For me, this was an unforgettable tale. If I can remember a novel so clearly, 10 years later, then I know it was a good read.

It is the story of a group of individuals, each with their own pain and loneliness, who come together to form an unlikely family unit. They each walk a fine balance between hope and despair, choosing to remain human amidst the most inhumane conditions.

One of my favourite authors is Jhumpa Lahiri. I've read all of her published works and she consistently blows me away. From the viewpoint of a daughter, lover, mother, or wife, there is something in each of her stories for everybody. Her simple prose and poignant observations on life never fail to draw me in.

Do you have a favourite novel or author? If so, I would love to know!!!!
Please, please share.

I Heart Blue Grey

Some favourites of mine. Perhaps it is due to the vast grey skies, but I'm really loving these colours at the moment.

Craziness

The last few days have been a little bit crazy.

It started off last weekend with an irritated, bloodshot eye, which I quickly (and wrongly) diagnosed as pinkeye. It then progressed into something much worse. Lots of swelling and pain. Can you imagine a blood red golf golf ball painfully lodged into your left socket? Then, I was unable to focus. Then, I lost my vision.

It was scary.

In my mind I was officially going blind. I was the victim of an extremely rare, obnoxious disease. I can be a bit melodramatic sometimes. Just a bit.

Two specialists later, I was officially diagnosed with having a severely dry eye. Dry eye? Can do this?

I've known Mark for 10 years, and he never leaves the house without a small bottle of Visine in his pocket. Me? I suffered silently and unquestionably with dry, itchy, eyes for the past year. Not once did it occur to me to seek relief in the form of eye drops.

Silly me.
I have learned my lesson.
I've also learned to never "google" medical symptoms again.

My eye is doing much better. The pain is gone, but I still have yet to regain all of my vision. The doctor thinks it should be back within the next week.

Feeling better, I also made a new bracelet, which I hope to post later today or tomorrow.

A Softer Side

Here are some reasons why I love winter....

Nature can be so beautiful stripped down and bare. Exposed. I wanted to create a series of photos depicting winter in a warmer, friendlier, softer light.

I never really used to enjoy winter until I took up skiing a few years ago. Now I adore winter. But you don't need to ski to enjoy January. Bundle up. Really bundle up. And make sure that there is a nice reward once you return home - a warm cup of tea or some time by the fire. I guarantee you will not regret it.

I will be adding these photos and more to my shop over the next few days.

A New Year

It is time to say farewell

to the festivities
twinkling lights
and fading holiday flowers

It is time for new beginnings.

I am really looking forward to this year. A year full of possibilities and creative adventures.

I won't bore you with the details of my resolution list, but I am hoping to create something new and beautiful each week.

Wishing you lots of joy, prosperity, peace, and beauty over the next 365 days!!!!

I'm off to go for a walk in the sunshine and play with my new lens.
